Appearance: Color: Heartwood is reddish orange when freshly cut, turning to reddish and purple-brown or black over time. Sapwood is cream colored. Very uniform
Grain: Straight to interlocked ; coarse texture
Availability: Moderately
Properties:
Hardness: 1725, Janka Table, 34% harder than Northern red oak .
Durability: Excellent
Workability:
Sawing: Well, carbide tooling recommended
Nailing: Good
Sanding: Satisfactorily
Finishing: Well, water-based finishes hold color better, has a tendency to bleed.
